Ecdysone Deficiency in Juvenile Hormone Treated Larvae of the German Cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.)

  • Chapter

Abstract

According to Wigglesworth (1957), juvenile hormone (JH) acts in opposition to the second principal insect hormone, ecdysone, but this relationship is not construed as a simple inhibitory effect. JH was given a key role in determining the outcome of ecdysis induced by ecdysone by either suppressing new genetic information (Williams, 1961; Schneiderman and Gilbert, 1964), or activating specific genes of a conservative character (Wigglesworth, 1961). Both theories are based on the varying titer of JH during postembryonic development and both neglect the simultaneous variations in the amount of ecdysone. In other words, ecdysone is supposed to be always present in a quantity high enough to stimulate morphogenesis but the given amount of JH limits its activating capacity.
