Recovery of Juvenile Characteristics Through In Vitro Propagation of Mature Fast-Growing Birch Hybrids

Abstract

Mature hybrids of Betula platyphylla var, japonica x B. pendula were micro-propagated using dormant winter buds as expiant source. The in vitro propagated plants showed characteristics of juvenile seedlings such as vigorous orthotropic growth, absence of flowering, and a high rooting capacity of cuttings taken from 2-year-old in vitro propagated plants. When reestablished in vitro, expiants of the micropropagated plants gave better results compared to the original mature material.
