A Critical Review of Studies on Axonal and Terminal Degeneration

From a discussion of the application and potentialities of silver methods, which took place at a recent meeting of Dr. Rioch’s neurological research unit in Washington, we felt that the time had come to review the work which had been carried out with the Glees and Nauta silver methods. We also thought an account of the multitudinous sources of error inherent in silver impregnation techniques might be useful to those who lack experience in the interpretation of pictures obtained by such techniques. Careless staining, for instance, may produce effects which might be mistaken for signs of degeneration.
