Tungsten Powder Metallurgy in the Production of Large Crucibles and Susceptors

Abstract

Because of its refractory properties and relative chemical inertness in certain selected environments, tungsten has been used in a number of crucible and susceptor applications. This paper describes the production of large susceptors, crucibles, thin-wall crucibles, and crucibles with integral stirring fins up to 36 in. in diameter and weighing up to 1700 lb. Among the variables described are powder characteristics, isostatic pressing and large isostats, high-temperature sintering (up to 2575°C), and, finally, susceptor utilization.
