Critical Velocities in Superfluid Flow through Orifices

Abstract

A number of recent experiments1–3 on the flow of superfluid helium have found an “intrinsically limited” flow which behaves qualitatively as predicted by Iordanskii and by Langer and Fisher for flow limited by homogeneous nucleation of quantized vortex rings.4–6
