Critical Opalescent Light Scattering in 3He-4He Mixtures Near the Tricritical Point

Abstract

Mixtures of the two isotopes 3He-4He display a “tricritical point” at the junction of a “lambda” line of superfluid transitions and the consolute critical point, where a first-order miscibility gap goes continuously into perfect miscibility.1 The simultaneous occurrence of two transitions in this critical region provides particularly stringent tests of theories of critical points.
