The Viscosity of 3He-4He Solutions
We have measured the viscosity of 1.3%, 3.5%, and 5% solutions of 3He in 4He from 25 m°K to 0.5°K with a vibrating wire viscometer of the type used previously1 for measurements on pure 3He, operating at a frequency of the order of 200 Hz. The major change to the apparatus for the present measurements was that a pill of powdered CMN immersed in the solution was used as a primary thermometer. This powdered salt was contained in an Epibond 100A appendix to the viscometer cell, connected to it by a tube largely filled with a brush of fine copper wires. Speer resistance thermometers immersed in the liquid were used to monitor the temperatures of the viscometer and salt chamber, and thus to ensure that measurements were made only in thermal equilibrium.
