Effect of Bacillus Calmette Guerin on the Metabolism of Alveolar Macrophages
Numerous investigations have been carried out employing in vitro studies to characterize the change in biochemical activities of phagocytes subsequent to particle uptake. Sbarra and Karnovsky  reported that following ingestion of polystyrene spherules, polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) doubled their rate of oxygen uptake during a 60-min incubation period. Oren et al.  reported that guinea pig peritoneal macrophages (PM) exhibited a tripling of their rate of oxygen uptake in a similar experiment. In contrast, they also observed that guinea pig alveolar macrophages (AM) did not appreciably demonstrate an increased rate of oxygen uptake 60 min after phagocytizing polystyrene spherules.
