Esterase Histochemistry of Reticuloendothelial Cells

Abstract

Although other reports on the histochemical distribution of esterases in lymphoid tissue have been published [1, 2, 3], these have led to some confusion because of differences in (1) the descriptions of the distribution of such esterases and their fine localization, and (2) the interpretation of the possible functional significance of such enzyme systems. Some of these differences are accounted for by species variations [4], and others are possibly results of technical artifacts. This report deals with a controlled histochemical investigation of the distribution of cholinesterases and nonspecific esterases in lymph nodes, spleen, and liver from rabbits. The results are interpreted in terms of a function for macrophage and endothelial esterases in lipid metabolism and detoxification mechanisms.
