Abstract
This study is part of a larger series related to the origin of the alveolar macrophage and the responsivity of alveolar cells to injected and inhaled stimuli. Alveolar epithelial proliferation has been measured by use of tritiated thymidine in rats which had received one or two injections of Freund’s adjuvant. An increase in the rate of DNA synthesis accompanied the proliferative response. Histological and ultrastructural observations are summarized briefly. A similar increase in numbers of alveolar epithelial cells entering mitosis is reported following inhalation of about 25 or 50 µg Fe2O3 dust.
