Platelets, Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis

Abstract

Injury to the endothelium plays an important part in the development of atherosclerosis and its thromboembolic complications. The constituents of the blood that interact at the injury site are platelets, blood coagulation factors, white blood cells, and plasma lipoproteins. Hemodynamic forces also influence the process. Materials released or formed from platelets can affect the endothelium and the smooth muscle cells in the vessel wall. In addition, substances formed by the vessel wall at the injury site (such as prostaglandins and proteoglycans) influence the formation of thrombi and the development of atherosclerotic lesions.
