Abstract

Ever since the clinically important arterial fibrous plaques were described in the past century on the basis of their gross and light microscopic appearance, there has been general agreement that these plaques represent the hallmark of atherosclerosis. Subsequent use of modern methods and tools in the examination of these lesions has yielded much new biochemical and structural data on their nature and has stimulated a broadening of concepts concerning the fibrous plaque and the disease as a whole.
