HL-A Antigens, Antibody, and Complement in the Lymphocytotoxic Reaction

Abstract

Histocompatibility antigens are genetically segregating allotypic substances which are associated with or included in the membrane of cells of some, but not all, members of a species. Tissues or cells in suspension that carry such antigens induce an immune response when introduced into another member of the homologous species. This immunity can be measured in several ways, such as: (1) by detection of antibodies in the serum of a patient who has received a transplant from an incompatible donor, (2) by accelerated rejection of a second graft from the same donor, or (3) by demonstration of increased immunological reactivity in the lymphoid cells of the recipient. In man, the major histocompatibility system is controlled by genes at the HL-A locus (human leukocyte locus A).
