Marked acceleration in the development of surrogate surgical implants has taken place over the past 20 years. As a direct consequence, previously intractable difficulties such as hydrocephalus, heart-block, incompetent heart valves and others are now being challenged successfully. All of these are dependent upon inert materials, in some form, for safe and efficacious performance. Fortuitously, the introduction of silicones in pure form coincided with this demand.
