Influence of Particles on Laser Induced Air Breakdown
We shall describe a portion of our experimental program on laser induced air breakdown. The purpose of our experiments is to measure the effect of particles in the focal volume of the laser beam on the breakdown threshold and to investigate the nature of the initiation process and the growth mechanisms of the plasma. Although we are interested primarily in particle induced breakdown we have done some experiments in clean air and on a carbon surface.

- 2.The breakdown wave front is defined by the points at which the breakdown threshold has been exceeded. The velocity of the resulting wave toward the laser depends upon the geometrical convergence of the laser beam produced by the focussing lens. A derivation of this velocity is given in Ref. 1.Google Scholar
