Influence of Particles on Laser Induced Air Breakdown

Abstract

We shall describe a portion of our experimental program on laser induced air breakdown. The purpose of our experiments is to measure the effect of particles in the focal volume of the laser beam on the breakdown threshold and to investigate the nature of the initiation process and the growth mechanisms of the plasma. Although we are interested primarily in particle induced breakdown we have done some experiments in clean air and on a carbon surface.
