Brain Glycoproteins and Recognition Functions: Recognins and Cancer

Abstract

When the first determination of the structure of brain gangliosides (1) showed them to have a glucocerebroside basis, with galactose, hexosamine and neuraminic acid residues attached, the suitability of the structure for membrane, receptor and recognition functions was proposed (2). Because of the relationship of gangliosides to Tay-Sachs disease, this conference has often been the place where we have first reported the progress of our studies over the past years on the structure and function of the brain gangliosides and brain glycoproteins, that is, the brain mucoids.
