Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing in Australia and New Zealand

The results of antibiotic sensitivity testing in practice are reviewed on the basis of information collected over a period of six years in the microbiology surveys which are conducted annually for The Royal College of Pathologists of Australia. In 1971 a simple calibrated disc method of sensitivity testing, the features of which are presented, was introduced into the surveys. It was demonstrated over the next three years that a marked improvement in the performance of sensitivity testing in practice resulted from the adoption by all laboratories of this calibrated method. The degree of precision achieved by the laboratories in the application of the uniform method was also studied and attention is drawn to its significance in determining the number of grades of sensitivity which can be reported accurately in practice. The value of collaboration between diagnostic laboratories and laboratories specialising in antibiotic sensitivity testing is discussed and emphasis is given to the need to establish reference centres for antibiotic sensitivity testing.
