An Immunofluorescence Approach toward the Identification of Endosymbiotic Diatoms in Several Species of Larger Foraminifera
Larger foraminifera are collectively the hosts for a diverse range of endosymbiotic algae. Individual species of forams are hosts for dinoflagellates, chlorophytes rhodophytes or diatoms (reviewed in Lee, 1980; Lee and McEnery, 1983; Leuteneger, 1984). Although host/symbiont specificity is considered the norm in invertebrate/algal symbioses the diatom-bearing foraminifera seem to be an exception. Lee, and coworkers (1980a, b, work in progress; Lee and Reimer, 1983) have identified approximately 20 different species of diatoms which they have isolated from species of larger formaminifera. Usually specimens of a host species harbor only a single diatom species at one time but specimens of the same host may harbor a different diatom species at another location in the field or when collected again at the same station.
