The Effect of Chemical Combination on X-Ray Spectra: Open Discussion
J. Merritt (Shell Development): This is quite a minor point, but it may get some discussion started. There has been reference several times during this afternoon to the self-absorption effect. We were intrigued by the work that Baun and Fischer did on the L 2/L 3 ratio, and their study showed that this varied for the iron transition elements with accelerating voltage. We said this is the L 3 edge in between these two lines, and so Chet Muller of our laboratories prepared a very thin sample (he estimates it was about 1000 ± 500 Å) and found that the L 2/L 3 ratio did not vary with accelerating voltage, which I think confirms the idea that it is an absorption effect, and I presume it was due to the L 3 edge.
