Hydrogen in Metals 1982

Any summary of a major conference in an active and diverse field must be a personal view. One can look back on previous meetings to gain an historical perspective, and I shall look back to the Jülich meeting (1) as a guide to the changes over the last decade. It is the future directions, the areas where activity, controversy or promise are most evident, which are both the hardest to identify and the most important to isolate among the ninety or more papers at this meeting.
