The Fluorescence of Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocyclics
Earlier reports from this laboratory revealed striking solvent effects on the positions of the fluorescence emission maxima in the indole series. The present report describes the extension of this work to the study of the fluorescence of quinoline, acridine, and other benzoquinolines in various solvents. The effects of solvents on the fluorescence spectra are compared with the UV absorption spectra of the same compounds in various solvents. These solvent effects are discussed in relation to hydrogen bonding effects, basicity, and electronic structure.
