Looking forward to the quantitative interpretation of the continuous spectra and later of the Fraunhofer lines of the Sun and stars we turn to the physics of stellar atmospheres. We can characterize the atmosphere, that is those layers of a star that transmit radiation to us directly, by the following parameters:
