Abstract

Urban growth is taking place at an alarming rate in the developing world. Natural increase in population combined with rural-urban migration has resulted in overcrowded inner-city areas and extensive squatter settlements. Many of the problems caused by rapid urban growth are elaborated elsewhere but I would like to add some points of contrast which emerged at an Expert Group Meeting on Rehabilitation of the Existing Housing Stock organized in New Delhi by the United Nations Center for Human Settlements.
