Microprocessor and Programmable Controller Based Industrial Automation

The paper sets out to identify application areas in processing industries in which microprocessors and programmable controllers (PC) may be used selectively to automate the process lines. Comparative advantages of these two systems are discussed. In particular automation of a steel sheet classifier which uses two microprocessor based systems is described. Other examples of PC based automation are briefly described which bring out the salient points which are foremost in the system designer’s mind when considering automation of any plant, particularly those requiring fast response from the controller.
