The prevention of coronary heart disease, from the viewpoint of numbers, will certainly be the greatest achievement of modern medicine. Despite the recent foray of politicians into cancer research, simple arithmetic shows the urgency of the heart disease problem. Oddly, many seem to believe prevention of coronary heart disease would help only the aged and infirm, but the young business executive is far from immune. Obviously, prevention would more likely be achieved if we knew the cause of atherosclerosis.
