Loud Sounds During Feeding in Indian Ocean Bottlenose Dolphins

The hypothesis that odontocetes use intense sounds to debilitate their prey, was put forth in detail by Norris and Mohl in 1983. While they were able to draw together a strong body of indirect evidence in support of this hypothesis, definitive observations of prey debilitation in action have been lacking from studies of wild or captive dolphins. In the course of fieldwork on the behavior and vocalizations of wild Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.), we observed dolphins producing loud sounds while feeding. We present these observations and discuss them as evidence for acoustic prey debilitation. We also present other hypotheses as to their origin.
