Effects of Pressure on the Kinetics of Sterically Hindered Square Planar Palladium(II) Complexes

Abstract

Generally substitution reactions of square planar complexes of such metal ions as Pt(II), Pd(II), and Au(III) obey a two-term rate law of the form [1]
$$ Rate = {k_1}\left[ {complex} \right] + {k_2}\left[ {complex} \right]\left[ y \right] $$

The pseudo first order rate constant k1 represents the substitution of a ligand X by either a solvent molecule with a subsequent fast replacement of S by Y (reaction scheme (a) or the rate determining dissociation of X from the complex with the formation of a highly reactive, coordinatively unsaturated intermediate (reaction scheme (b) of Fig. 1.) The second order rate constant k2 reflects a direct substitution of X by Y as depicted in part (a).
