Status of Coal Gasification: 1977

Abstract

High-pressure technology is important to coal gasification for several reasons. When the end product is substitute natural gas, which is mostly methane, high pressures in the gasifier reactor improve both the methane yield and the process efficiency. Also, the use of high pressures in all types of coal gasification reduces the pressure drop throughout the equipment, favorably affects heat and mass transfer in the reaction zones, and increases throughput and capacity as compared to operation at atmospheric pressure.
