Microstructure of Laboratory and Nuclear Explosively Deformed Gas-Bearing Sandstones

  • L. A. Dengler

Abstract

Project Rio Blanco was a nuclear gas stimulation experiment designed to increase permeability in an existing gas reservoir. In the experiment, three simultaneously-detonated 30 kiloton explosive devices, spaced in a single wellbore, were used to stimulate the low-permeability, gas-bearing sandstones of the Fort Union and Mesa Verde formations in the Piceance Creek basin of Colorado. General information regarding the project and reservoir rock may be found elsewhere [1 and 2].
