Pressure Dependence of Elastic Properties for B2O3-Na2O Glasses and Equations of State for Glass
A number of measurements have been reported on the anomalous elastic properties of fused silica [1,2]. Compared with the silicates, however, few studies have been made on the pressure dependence of the elastic modulus of alkali borate glasses. It has well been established that the addition of alkali ions to B2O3 yields a tetrahedral BO4 unit (boric acid anomaly ). Therefore there is a possibility in B2O3-Na2O glasses, as deduced from the relationship between elastic anomaly of glass and tetrahedral coordination , that some degree of elastic anomaly might emerge as a result of BO4 tetrahedron formation. The purpose of the present study was first to determine the elastic properties of B2O3-Na2O glasses under pressure and to check the anomalous trend in the elastic properties, if any. The present paper also attempts to interpret the elastic anomaly/normality in glass in terms of the microscopic variation in glass structure, utilizing the equations of state proposed for glass.
