Industrial Applications of High-Pressure Technology

  • H. P. Bovenkerk

The discoveries by scientists and the technical achievements of engineers in the past 25 years have led to the creation of an industry for the routine processing of materials at pressures greater than 50 kbars combined with temperatures exceeding 1500 K. An industry such as this is also built on the foundations of the earlier findings of Bridgman and other eminent researchers who gave us the cemented carbides, high strength steels, and refractory materials without which all this would not be possible. This processing results in products of key industrial importance such as diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN), both in single-crystal and polycrystalline-compacted forms.
