The Discovery of Positronium

  • Martin Deutsch
Part of the The Subnuclear Series book series (SUS, volume 25)

These are my personal recollections of a sequence of events which might prove nostalgic for the old or inspiring for the young. In parts my tale may even be cautionary. I do not guarantee rigorous precision of historical detail but a reasonable effort has been made at verification from contemporary records. Nor will I expand on the impact of the ideas and results which grew from the events in my story during the intervening forty years. For those who would like to learn the physics involved, I recommend the collection of contributions in “Adventures in Experimental Physics” vol. 4, Bogdan Maglich, Ed. For more recent reviews of positronium see, e.g. Berko (1980) and Rich (1981).
