As I pointed out earlier, Merton’s definition of a latent dysfunction entails interference with a requirement of the system as its distinguishing mark. One possible effect of frustrating a system need is to exacerbate the very condition that one has undertaken to alleviate, a possibility that Merton does not develop. This is the issue of concern in the present chapter.
