It will have become evident from the discussion in §10.10 that for a given type 0 or type 1 system, when adequate closed-loop stability is the only design criterion, then this can always be achieved by adjustment of the error constant using Brown’s construction. Normally the design specifications are very much more stringent and usually specify:
  1. (a)

    A minimum value of error constant so as to achieve the desired degree of steady-state accuracy (frequently the basic system will be unstable with this error constant).

  2. (b)

    A maximum or minimum rise time to a step input.

  3. (c)

    Adequate stability (Mpf about 1·3).
