Abstract

Ceramic materials are now coming into their own in the aerospace industry. Solid ceramics in combustion chambers and throats are replacing metals because of their extremely high fusion or decomposition temperatures. Coatings supplement both ceramic and metals by adding such properties as thermal insulation, erosion resistance, chemical resistance, and, in the case of metals, a temperature-resistant property.
