The primary objective of foamed materials development at Ipsen Industries, Inc., is to obtain refractory insulation for use at temperatures in excess of 4000°F in a vacuum or in other environments. The process used in preparing foams of refractory oxides and of metals depends on entrainment of air in a slurry of the powdered material, followed by drying and sintering. Firing in an oxidizing atmosphere is employed in manufacturing alumina and zirconia foams, which are in production at the company’s subsidiary, Ipsen Ceramics, Inc., Pecatonica, Illinois. Thoria foams have been produced on a small scale.
