Metabolic Fates of Bradykinin, Angiotensin I, Adenine Nucleotides and Prostaglandins E1 and F in the Pulmonary Circulation

The lung appears to have a variety of means of eliminating circulating pharmacologic agents. Ether, paraldehyde and volatile sulfhydryl agents (e.g. BAL and 2-mercaptoethanol) pass from blood to the alveolar space. Agents such as acetylcholine can be metabolized by enzymes of the blood circulating through the pulmonary vascular bed. Amines such as norepinephrine and serotonin appear to be taken up by cells and stored for reuse or degradation. Recently, we have postulated the existence of yet another mechanism: degradation of pharmacologic agents by enzymes on or close to the luminal surface of pulmonary endothelial cells (1–8).
