It was well established before 1910 that phagocytosis is one of the main defenses against bacterial infection, and that neutrophils are aided in taking up bacteria by antibody and complement. Progress since then has consisted largely of filling in the details, and while a good deal of phenomenological information has accumulated, we are still far from being able to give a complete account of the process.
