Femo Technique: A Milestone for Remote Operation and Maintenance

  • H.-R. Oeser

The reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel employs chemical engineering techniques in a radioactive environment contained within concrete walls. The German concept for the first commercial reprocessing plant employs standardized prefabricated modular process equipment installed in a huge nitrogen-blanketed cell. The process is controlled remotely from a central control room. Maintenance is restricted to the exchange of small components or complete modules, but this is completely remotely operated using cranes and manipulators guided by cameras. The concept is described and examples from a 1: 1 scale testing facility are given.
