Not every software developer works with the profit motive uppermost in mind. Some (a surprising number) are simply hobbyists who do programming for their own pleasure and are happy to give the results away; indeed, some such hackers refuse as a matter of principle to seek or accept remuneration for their work. A lot of this programming isn’t very good; and much of it (both good and bad) involves computer games and other programs not of any real value to the business user.
