Abstract

During the first week of development, the following structures appear in succession (fig. 1): —
  • the trophoblast, by differentiation of the superficial cellular layer of the fertilized egg. (Since the trophoblast gives rise to the placenta, it will be studied with this organ, pp. 62 to 85.)

  • the amniotic cavity, which is hollowed out from the middle of the inner cell mass (embryoblast).
