The Diagnostic Value of Renal Tubular Reabsorption of Magnesium Calculations in Calcium-Containing Kidney Stone Formers
In our previous studies, a high incidence of hypomagnesemia was found among calcium-containing kidney stone formers. In the hypomagnesemic patients, urinary magnesium excretion did not differ significantly from that of either healthy individuals or normomagnesemic stone formers. However, oral and parenteral Mg supplementation caused a significant increment in urinary Mg excretion, suggesting that there was renal Mg wasting in these patients. To investigate this problem we have calculated TRMg% in a randomly selected group of calcium-containing kidney stone formers. The purpose of the study was to compare the diagnostic value of TRMg% and the urinary excretion of Mg as determinants of renal Mg wasting.
