Abstract

Nephrolithiasis is an infrequent cause of death or end-stage renal disease1. Nevertheless, kidney stones in our country represent an important health problem because they may lead to urinary obstruction, infection, surgery and progressive loss of renal function, Venezuela is located in the stone belt of the Caribbean but epidemiological surveys in relation to the incidence of renal lithiasis are lacking. In one of our hospitals from 7, 108 emergency room consultations during one year, 158 subjects (2.22%) presented with renal colic and in almost all of them a renal stone was demonstrated. A metabolic survey of patients with calcium stones has been conducted in our renal stone clinic in order to define the metabolic variables in our population and to plan a rational therapeutic approach directed to reduce the high recurrence of the problem.
