14C-Calcium Oxalate (CaOx) Adherence in the Rat Bladder

For clinical stone disease to occur, a nucleus must form and be retained until a crystalline mass is attained which is sufficient to cause clinical symptoms or be identified radiologically. The mechanism by which a nucleus is retained has received little attention. Parsons et al1 have demonstrated that the mucin layer of the rabbit bladder prevents the adherence of bacteria. Gill et al2 showed that when crystallization of calcium oxalate was induced in the rat bladder, few crystals adhered if the mucin layer was intact.
