Allopurinol Treatment in Urolithiasis

  • B. Fellström

A large number of prophylactic treatments have been used to prevent stone formation in the urinary tract. Treatment with orthophosphate, thiazides and magnesium hydroxide have been shown to be effective in preventing recurrence of calcium stone disease. Allopurinol has been used in the treatment of both uric acid stones and calcium oxalate stones. A brief review of the theoretical background and the results from various studies of allopurinol in the treatment of urolithiasis will be given.
