Abstract

Sterols are major components of brain cellular and subcellular membranes and they are represented almost exclusively in mature mammalian brain by non-esterified cholesterol. However, during brain maturation and myelin deposition, stages of development characterized by a high rate of cholesterol biosynthesis, considerable amounts of desmosterol, a sterol precursor of cholesterol, are present in the brain of several mammalian species, i ncIudi ng man (1).
