As we have already discussed, the phenomenon of polarized luminescence is quite satisfactorily described by means of the linear oscillator model. This conclusion agrees with classical and quantum theory for atoms and diatomic molecules. For complex molecules there is no strict quantum-mechanical theory, but the oscillator model may be substantiated with the aid of the symmetry properties of molecular states.
