Basic Photometric Concepts
In the subsequent account we will constantly have to deal with certain photometric quantities and other concepts which are not a familiar part of the geologist’s work. The concepts which we will have to discuss include the scattering (diffusion) of radiant energy by reflection from the surface of an object, the types of indicatrices of diffusion, the luminance of a reflecting surface, the spectral luminance, and the spectral luminance factor. Definitions of these concepts and their evaluation can be found in several textbooks, particularly those of Landsberg (1957), Fabry (1934), Tikhov (1950), Volosov and Tsivkin (1960), and others.
