Painting, so the dictionary tells us, is the coating of surfaces with a liquid mixture, usually of a solid pigment in a liquid medium, for the purposes of decoration or protection. The description is apt and will be immediately recognizable. The process goes back thousands of years, certainly to Egyptian times as the relics of those dynasties prove.
