Investment casting applications

  • Chapter
Book cover Robotics in Practice

Abstract

The process of investment casting has its origins in the ‘lost-wax’ technique first used over five thousand years ago. Because of its ability to produce detailed and often delicate castings, the process was originally used in jewellery manufacture and for objets d’art, but its use faded out so that it remained dormant for hundreds of years until it was taken up again in modern form in the 1940’s. Now it is in general use throughout manufacturing as a speciality process for making intricate parts of surpassing accuracy.
